Typhoon and Tropical Storm
A low-pressure system that forms over tropical oceans is known as a tropical cyclone. Internationally, its intensity is classified based on the maximum sustained wind speed near its center:
- Level 12 or higher: Typhoon
- Levels 10–11: Strong Tropical Storm
- Levels 8–9: Tropical Storm
- Below Level 8: Tropical Depression
Low Pressure Trough and High Pressure Ridge
On the undulating westerly airflow at high altitudes, a trough corresponds to a low-pressure area. The warm, moist air ahead brings rain or snow, while the cold air behind the trough causes cooler weather. A ridge corresponds to a high-pressure area, leading to clear skies.
