Japan efficiently extracts "green crude oil" from algae

The large amount of tiny algae in the lake and marsh is a potential threat to polluted water quality, but Japanese experts turned it into a treasure and developed new technologies that can extract "green crude oil" from these algae with high efficiency and low cost.

According to Kyodo News recently, although too many planktonic algae will lead to eutrophication of lakes and marshes, threaten water quality and destroy ecosystems, these algae have a strong ability to absorb carbon dioxide and synthesize organic matter, and are expected to be used as raw materials for biofuels. However, evaporating a large amount of water contained in plankton algae consumes a lot of energy, so it is still not feasible to use plankton algae to produce biofuels.

Researchers at the Japan Electric Power Central Research Institute succeeded in extracting oil that could be burned by adding liquefied dimethyl ether to planktonic algae, which can be tightly combined with the oil component. The researchers explained that when dimethyl ether is combined with the oil component in algae cells, as long as the dimethyl ether is evaporated at room temperature, the oil component can be extracted.

According to reports, the oil and fat components extracted by the above method are equivalent to about 40% of the weight of dry algae. Its calorific value after combustion is equivalent to that of gasoline, and it is expected to become a valuable "green crude oil".
