On November 19th, the National Furniture Industry Standardization Work Conference took place in Langfang, bringing together industry experts and representatives to discuss the upcoming "three national standards for harmful substances in furniture." These standards cover wooden furniture and sofas, aiming to ensure safer products for consumers. A groundbreaking international standard for "non-destructive testing" is also expected to be introduced this year and next, marking a significant step forward in furniture safety.
The conference highlighted the long-standing challenge of testing soft furniture, which lacked a clear national standard. While these products are currently manufactured according to industry guidelines, those standards mainly focus on functionality, durability, and design, without addressing environmental concerns like the release of harmful chemicals. Zhu Changling, Chairman of the China Furniture Association and the National Furniture Standardization Technical Committee, emphasized that the new national standards will address these gaps by introducing a more scientific and practical method—climate box testing.
Unlike previous destructive methods that required disassembling furniture, the climate box technique allows entire pieces, such as sofas and mattresses, to be placed inside a sealed chamber. This approach simulates real-world conditions and helps determine whether harmful substances exceed safe limits. Zhu mentioned that the three standards have gone through three rounds of discussion and are expected to be officially released soon. A large-scale inspection of soft sofa products may follow to assess the current state of the industry.
He believes the new standards will better guide manufacturers and regulate the market. For instance, quality supervision authorities can shift from post-production sampling to early-stage intervention through product certification, improving efficiency. The implementation of these standards will also allow certified testing institutions to conduct evaluations based on the new guidelines, giving consumers a stronger foundation when asserting their rights—making the process more rational and reliable than before.
As an organizer of the conference and a key participant in developing various furniture industry standards, the evolution of these regulations—from initial drafts to increasingly rigorous requirements—reflects the industry’s progress. By raising quality and environmental protection benchmarks, the standards help create a fairer market environment, benefiting both enterprises and consumers who now have access to better products and services.
