[Abstract] Techniques for determining the authenticity of a simulated form (117) such as a package or document. One of the techniques determines whether the analog modality is generated directly from the digital representation (903) or by photocopying or scanning the analog modality. The technique compares the original digital representation of a portion of the simulated form with the digital record (203) from that portion of the simulated form (911) and measures the difference in features affected by the copying or scanning operation. To make the determination. The original digital representation (105) and the analog modality may have a "noisy", ie random or pseudo-random pattern. Such a noisy pattern may further be used for other authentication purposes, such as determining if the portion of the analog modality with the noisy pattern has changed, and for carrying a hidden message.
