3D printing new realm: light painting for animation

Not all 3D print objects are real things. For Aaron Bothman, a student at the California College of the Arts, he hopes to add a 3D printed light and shadow effect to his thesis project, The Red Witch. He came up with the idea of seeing the work of artist Ekaggrat Singh Kalsi from Beijing. Ekarggrat printed a "light painting" with a modified 3D printer , and some media have reported the news.

This kind of "light painting" is not something you can watch on your hand. It can only appear on film and in images, and this is the purpose of Bothman.

Bothman and his father bought a 3D printer kit and assembled a small Delta-type 3D printer together, just a few changes in some places, replacing the original hot end with an LED, so in 3D When the printer is running, Bothman sets a camera to be a long-time exposure to track the running "light traces" of the captured LEDs, thereby drawing a beautiful "light animation" and recording it in the film.

This is not the first 3D printing project that Bothman and Sons worked together. In an interview with reporters, Aaron talked about the 3D printing he and his father had experienced together, and the impact of his studies at the California College of the Arts and after graduation:

“I am currently a cartoonist and artist in Los Angeles. I just graduated from the California Academy of Art animation project a few months ago and I am currently working as an artist in a small studio in JibJab in Los Angeles. I am working on 3D. The print was learned from my dad at high school. He taught mechanical engineering at UCSB (University of California, Santa Barbara). He helped me a lot in this project. As a stop motion animator, 3D printing allows me to achieve more ambitious projects through a relatively simple manufacturing process that is impossible with other technical means."

To create a light animation, each image on the Maya software is sent to a 3D printer, one frame at a time, creating an illusion of motion over time, just like shooting a more traditional stop motion animation. The end result is one, but built layer by layer, conceptually the same as 3D printing, except that no materials are used.
