Pear, also known as "flower palm," is famous for its unique grain patterns. Its wood features a "ghost face" pattern, commonly referred to as "raccoon spots," and is often called "flower raccoon." The old trees produce straight grains, while the young ones have more knots. The knot patterns resemble coins, with bright colors and clear textures, making it ideal for furniture and stationery. There are two types of pear wood: old pear and new pear. Old pear, also known as huanghuali, has a light yellow to purple hue, with a distinct texture and a subtle fragrance. New pear, on the other hand, has a reddish tone, but its texture and color are slightly inferior to that of old pear.
Huanghua pear, specifically from Hainan, is also called "buck-killing wood." According to the *Compendium of Materia Medica*, it is referred to as "scenting wood." Its woody water is believed to help lower blood pressure and blood lipids, and it's often used in pillows to promote circulation. Although this wood is easy to grow, it takes an extremely long time to mature into usable material. A tree with a thick trunk may only be suitable for a rolling pin. Real high-quality huanghuali requires hundreds of thousands of years to develop, making it the finest material for classic hardwood furniture.
Historical records indicate that by the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, Hainan huanghuali was already nearing extinction. Over the past few centuries, approximately 70% of China’s huanghuali wood furniture was exported abroad. What remains in China is mostly used for construction, roofing, or even broken down for daily use, leading to significant loss and damage. Most huanghuali available on the market today comes from Vietnam and Myanmar. These varieties have more vibrant colors and stronger aromas, but their textures are less consistent. Compared to genuine Hainan huanghuali, they are significantly cheaper—often ten times less in price.
There are seven key characteristics that distinguish rosewood according to national standards. These traits make it easier to identify and remember. Here are the six main visual aspects:
**First, examine the strip stripes**
Rosewood has thick grain patterns, with straight lines and a red, yellowish-brown, or reddish-brown heartwood. The longitudinal sections show clear, long strip-like markings.
**Second, observe the interlaced texture**
The wood displays a mix of blue, gray, and brownish-red tones, creating a staggered, layered appearance.
**Third, check for polarized light effects**
When viewed under a cut surface, rosewood shows a polarizing effect. Only at one angle does the refracted light appear brightest and most noticeable.
**Fourth, look at the "face" pattern**
Huanghua pear features a "ghost face" pattern, as described in *Guangzhou Zhi*: "Some have ghost-like patterns, and there are also raccoon spots." These patterns resemble coins, varying in size and shape.
**Fifth, inspect the "cow hair" texture**
Though the wood varies by region, most have a fine grain. When viewed from the end, the grain resembles cow hair, which is clearly visible.
**Sixth, check for fluorescence**
A faint fluorescent layer can be seen in rosewood. If a small piece is placed in water, green particles may float on the surface, emitting a soft glow. Even after rain, the fluorescence can be observed in the water runoff.
**Seventh, smell for sandalwood fragrance**
When you bring your nose close to the wood, you can detect a subtle sandalwood scent. While not as strong as that of Dalbergia, the aroma is still quite distinctive.
