ASTM recently released the new standard D8001, which uses a new method, ion chromatography, to measure total nitrogen, total Kjeldahl and total phosphorus. In the new method, the sample is disulfated and then subjected to ion chromatography for analysis without the need to distill the substrate.
The measurement of total Kjeldahl nitrogen and total nitrogen is usually carried out by distillation after distilling off the mixture produced by the digestion. The new standard ASTM8001 offers a completely new approach to choose from, where the sample is digested and separated by a column and detected with a conductivity detector with a suppressor.
