Ergonomic products – as recommended by real humans

Gareth from the Posturite online chat

Who exactly are you chatting with on the Posturite online chat when you need immediate ergonomic assistance or personalized workstation advice? Contrary to popular belief, it's not an AI-powered chatbot or even a young intern on work experience. Instead, you're speaking directly with experienced DSE Assessors Vikki and Gareth, who collectively boast over two decades of expertise in DSE ergonomics.

What sorts of questions do customers typically ask?

Vikki Greer, Senior Product Specialist (pictured below): “Every year, we handle more than 7,000 product inquiries through our Live Chat, but here are just a few examples:

  • I need a chair with a really short seat.
  • What’s the tallest monitor arm you offer?
  • I have very small hands. Which mouse would fit me best?
  • Will this laptop stand be sturdy enough for this PC?
  • I don’t quite understand how a roll bar mouse works?”

Gareth Braisdell, Product Specialist (pictured above): “We also assist professionals such as Access to Work assessors, physiotherapists, health and safety personnel, and occupational therapists. Their queries often involve:

  • My client experiences pain in certain areas of their body. What equipment might help them in their office job?
  • My client uses this particular keyboard. Which kind of mouse would work well with it?
  • Given these body measurements, which chair offers good lower back support and has adjustable armrests?

We especially enjoy queries that begin with ‘I don’t know if you can help me but…’ because we usually can!

Vikki and I don’t have sales targets – our mission is simply to provide genuine advice and assistance to those in need.

What knowledge do you bring to help customers select ergonomic products?

Vikki from Posturite provides product advice

“We’re seasoned DSE Assessors,” explains Vikki. A Posturite DSE Assessor is an expert who performs Display Screen Equipment (DSE) Assessments, ensuring comfort and productivity at your workstation. Both Vikki and Gareth, who manage the ‘Product Help’ and ‘DSE Advice’ chats for Posturite, draw on their extensive experience and training to evaluate whether your office chair, desk, and other equipment are suitable. They guide you on optimal positioning and recommend ways to prevent musculoskeletal disorders like backache and neck pain.

Gareth: “We’re the ones handling the ‘Product Help’ and ‘DSE Advice’ chats, and we both have backgrounds in anatomy and physiology. My BSc and Masters focused on Sport and Exercise Science, while Vikki’s degree was in Sports Therapy. Over the years at Posturite, we’ve personally tested and utilized hundreds of top ergonomic products. We know office chairs, desks, sit-stand platforms, keyboards, headsets, monitor arms, and mice inside out!”

What happens when a more complex health issue arises?

Of course, a brief online chat cannot replace a thorough assessment. “If we determine that measurements or photos of the workstation are necessary but unavailable, we’ll offer to continue the discussion via phone or Microsoft Teams for some free advice or suggest an assessment if needed,” says Gareth.

What do customers appreciate about the free advice from Posturite?

“Quick, caring, and solved my problem instantly” said James.

“Vikki is a lifesaver” mentioned Amanda.

“Your chat function and access to specialist advisors have been invaluable,” wrote one reviewer. She continued: “I am a OH physio and DSE assessor, and some of these assessments are quite complex, requiring specialized bespoke advice and equipment to address issues. Gareth on the chat has been polite, friendly, efficient, and most importantly, he provided excellent advice and product recommendations—even for off-catalogue items.”

“I could even send a photo via WhatsApp so she got a better understanding of my office chair. Vikki has been AMAZING with her support and recommendations!” wrote Nicole.

“It’s so good to speak to a customer service team that is proactive and helpful. Five stars!” Zoe commented.

Solving problems at the office

Ergonomic keyboard

Vikki: “It’s satisfying to come up with straightforward solutions on the spot for customers’ workstations! I once chatted with a man who had to manage three computers for different systems on his desk due to his job in security—not just three screens. He expected to need separate keyboards and mice for each computer. I recommended a KVM switch, which allows you to connect all three computers to this single device and control everything using just one keyboard and mouse. You simply press a button to switch between them.

There’s one question we can’t answer though: ‘Which is the best office chair?’! Because it depends entirely on the individual. So, we’ll ask about you, your role, and your workstation before making low, mid, and higher budget chair recommendations.

Many people ask ‘What’s the best chair for a specific condition?’ I always start by asking about their symptoms. It’s all about the individual. Where exactly do you feel the pain? Is it just your neck? Your arms? How tall are you and what are your measurements? If necessary, I’ll recommend an assessment to generate a detailed report.”

What enhances your comfort and productivity at your home workstation?

Gareth: “I prefer chairs with movement. Right now, I’m sitting on an RH Logic 220 ergonomic chair, and it’s incredibly comfortable for my back. I tend to wiggle around a lot, and this chair accommodates that perfectly.”

Vikki: “I alternate between standing and sitting throughout the day using a sit-stand desk. It’s great for changing postures and standing at work for part of the day—there’s plenty of research supporting the benefits of sit-stand desk usage. Mine is an electric Levado™ Sit-Stand Desk, and I love that it’s programmable. I just press a button, and it adjusts to my preset height quickly. Plus, it didn’t require any DIY skills to set up—it just clamps together and the legs unfold easily. Love it!

When I sit, I lower the desk again and use my Positiv Plus ergonomic chair. Mine has a ‘coccyx cut-out,’ which reduces pressure on my coccyx at the base of my spine since I have issues in that area. I also enjoy the movement of the Positiv Plus chair—I’m gently rocking all day.”

Ergonomic product puzzles

Vikki: “One online chat query really made me laugh! A customer asked how to make their screen bigger, and I assumed they meant magnifying the screen content. But they wanted to physically enlarge the screen itself. Unfortunately, I couldn’t help with that, but we suggested magnification software for them to zoom in instead.”

The humans behind the online chat

Gareth: “It always amuses me when people are surprised that I’m not a bot! When customers browse office chairs or other equipment, a message pops up saying, ‘Hello, need help choosing an ergonomic chair?’ Sometimes they type random things back. When I reply, showing I’ve read their message, they often apologize and are usually impressed.

Another great aspect is that we can share links to specific products during the chat and view product descriptions and photos of keyboards or mice on our website together in real-time. Customers can request an email summary of the conversation if they wish, which is helpful for reviewing and deciding what to purchase.”

Why is online chat better for customers compared to emails and phone calls?

Vikki: “Through our online chat, a customer gets an immediate response to their question. We offer faster advice on office equipment, and customers frequently praise our prompt replies.

With other chat services, many are automated and don’t provide clear answers. You often end up going in circles, and a bot says, ‘I can’t help you with that.’ It’s frustrating!”

Gareth: “Exactly. Our live chat is person-centered.”

The Posturite online chat is available from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. Click the green ‘Expert product help and advice’ speech bubble on any page of our website to start a chat. You can choose ‘Customer Services’ for general order and delivery inquiries or ‘Product Help’ and ‘DSE Advice’ for specialized guidance.
