From apartheid to the Falklands War, season four of The Crown brings a whirlwind of historical events to life. The show doesn't shy away from the darker side of history, portraying everything from political assassinations to royal scandals. One of the most anticipated moments is the introduction of Princess Diana and Margaret Thatcher, two iconic figures who left a lasting mark on British society. While the Buckingham Palace sets maintain their classic elegance, the rest of the sets avoid the temptation of overly modernizing, staying true to the spirit of each era. “Just as the ‘60s didn’t suddenly become Austin Powers, we didn’t go Dynasty either,†says Martin Childs, the production designer behind the series. Architectural Digest recently shared behind-the-scenes images from the fourth season, and we’re bringing you a fresh perspective with a touch of modern flair. Take a look!
Martin Childs, the mastermind behind the sets, returns for this installment spanning from the late 1970s to 1990. Together with set decorators Sophie Coombes, Alison Harvey, and Carolyn Boult, he transforms soundstages and country estates into Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, Windsor Castle, Balmoral, Mustique, and even the HMY Royal Britannia. They also designed the interiors of 10 Downing Street, the Spencer family estate Althorp House, and a royal tour through Australia and New Zealand. Creating over 400 sets for just 10 episodes, the team ensured no two sets looked alike, focusing on authenticity and diversity. “Designing the historical sets is more of an interpretation because you have to make them all look very different from each other; that is the aim. If you follow the research, they will all look alike,†Childs explained.
The royal marriage between Charles and Diana is portrayed briefly but powerfully. The interior of Winchester Cathedral stands in for St. Paul’s Cathedral, capturing the tension-filled rehearsal. Meanwhile, Diana practices for her big day at Chelsea House, wearing a gown that closely resembles her original wedding dress, complete with a 25-foot train designed by Emmy-winning costume designer Amy Roberts.
During their engagement, Prince Charles embarks on royal duties, leaving Diana to navigate her new life at Kensington Palace alone. She fills her days roller skating to Duran Duran in the hallways and answering fan mail. It's a poignant moment that captures the isolation she must have felt as she prepared for her new role.
