New Year, New Packaging Waste Regulations – Are You Ready?
Happy New Year, everyone! As we settle into the rhythm of 2014, many businesses are already focusing on their goals for the coming months. At Kite Environmental Solutions (KES), we’re here to make sure you’re staying compliant with the ever-evolving Packaging Waste Regulations. These rules aren’t just about managing your waste—they’re a regulatory obligation tied directly to the amount of packaging your business handles annually.
To make things easier, KES has recently refreshed their website, offering clearer guidance and FAQs for anyone navigating the compliance process. You can still access the site at its familiar URL, https://www.packagingregs.co.uk/, and follow them on Twitter at @packagingregs. This update reflects years of work aimed at simplifying the journey for businesses like yours. From newcomers seeking clarity to seasoned registrants needing support, KES provides tailored resources to ensure you’re fully compliant.
While KES operates separately from Kite, their deep roots in the packaging sector give them unique insights. If you're looking for expert consultation or on-site audits, they’re the go-to team.
So, let's dive into some pressing questions as we kick off the New Year:
Are you obligated?
With fresh sales figures in hand, it’s possible your business now falls under the Packaging Waste Regulations due to increased activity last year. These regulations are mandatory, enforced by the Environment Agency, so compliance isn’t optional. To qualify, your business must meet three criteria:
- A physical presence in the UK (e.g., office, site, or company registration),
- An annual turnover exceeding £2 million,
- Handling over 50 tonnes of packaging annually (excluding exports).
Data collection for these obligations starts immediately, and the entire process needs to be completed by March. If you think you might be affected, visit the KES website for detailed steps to ensure you’re covered. Failing to register could lead to penalties from the Environment Agency, including fines or enforcement actions.
Are you registered?
January is peak season for KES as they gather data to calculate your Packaging Recovery Note (PRN) requirements. Even if you’re aiming to register before the March deadline, there’s still time to reach out and get organized. Kite customers can use the convenient Packaging Regulations tool on their 'My Account' page to track their packaging usage. We hope this post helps you feel confident about tackling the regulations in 2014. If you have lingering questions, don’t hesitate to explore the KES website or call their team at 02476 420088. Here’s to a successful year ahead—compliant and stress-free!
Cheers,
