Review: CrazyCap2 Ultraviolet Water Bottle

I recently got my hands on the CrazyCap Gen2, a reusable water bottle equipped with UV light technology designed to purify water. While it's marketed as a handy tool for outdoor enthusiasts and emergency preparedness, I approached it with both curiosity and skepticism. The CrazyCap Gen2 is essentially a system that combines a reusable water bottle with a UV light built into the cap. The idea is simple: tap the cap a couple of times, and the UV light activates to purify your water. For tap water, it takes about 60 seconds, while for natural sources like lakes or rivers, it requires 120 seconds. The bottle itself comes in an insulated stainless steel design, offering a 17 oz capacity, and the cap fits snugly onto various standard-sized bottles. Upon unboxing, the first thing that struck me was the bottle’s design. Unlike many water bottles with straws or nozzles, the CrazyCap has an open mouth. This design choice immediately gave me pause. From a hygiene standpoint, an open-mouthed bottle feels risky. When you're out in the wild or dealing with questionable water sources, every bit of exposure increases the risk of contamination. Even worse, since the cap locks tightly around the bottle’s opening, any dirt or germs on the outside of the cap can easily transfer to your lips when drinking. It’s not something I'd want to rely on in a survival scenario. The cap itself is made of stainless steel and houses the UV light apparatus. It’s supposed to be easy to clean, but there’s a narrow gap between the UV light and the bottle opening that’s difficult to reach. CrazyCap recommends washing it with soap and water, but for thorough cleaning, you’d likely need a specialized brush. In a pinch, this could become a major issue, especially if you’re relying on the bottle during a trip without access to proper cleaning supplies. The bottle’s charging mechanism is also a bit clunky. The charger is a cap-like device that fits over the UV light and charges via USB. It’s functional but feels unnecessarily bulky. The charger’s position on the cap isn’t perfect either—it tilts slightly due to the uneven placement of the charging spikes. I wish they had gone for a more sleek and user-friendly design, perhaps incorporating a magnetic charger instead. On the positive side, the UV light does its job quickly. It automatically runs a cycle every four hours to keep the bottle sanitized, which is a thoughtful feature. However, I encountered some inconsistencies when activating the UV light. Sometimes it worked right away, but other times I had to tap repeatedly before it turned on. This unpredictability was frustrating, especially if you’re trying to purify water in a hurry. Another interesting feature is that the UV light can be used to sterilize small objects like phones or keys. This could come in handy during a pandemic, but it’s more of a bonus than a primary function. It’s worth noting that UV light can irritate the skin, so it’s not ideal for prolonged use on hands. Overall, the CrazyCap Gen2 has its merits. It’s compact, lightweight, and effective at sterilizing water within a reasonable timeframe. However, its open-mouth design and inconsistent UV activation make it less than ideal for serious survival scenarios. For casual use or daily commutes, it could be a decent option, but I personally wouldn’t trust it for long-term outdoor adventures or emergencies. In conclusion, while the concept of UV water purification is promising, the CrazyCap Gen2 falls short in several key areas. Its design flaws and operational quirks prevent it from being a reliable tool for preparedness. If you’re looking for a water purification solution, there are better options out there, such as portable filters or purification tablets. The CrazyCap Gen2 might be a fun gadget for everyday use, but it’s not something I’d recommend for serious preppers or adventurers.
