Review: CrazyCap2 Ultraviolet Water Bottle

I recently got my hands on a CrazyCap Gen2 bottle, which is marketed as a portable UV light purification system for water. While the idea sounds promising, especially for someone who enjoys hiking or traveling, my experience with it left me feeling a bit conflicted. The first thing that struck me was the design of the bottle itself. It’s a sleek, reusable 17oz stainless steel bottle with an integrated UV light in the cap. The cap fits snugly onto the bottle, and the UV light is supposed to activate with a single tap. For regular use, like filtering tap water, the UV light purifies the water in about 60 seconds. If you're dealing with more questionable water sources, like a lake or river, it takes 120 seconds. The UV light also has an auto-shutoff feature, which is convenient if you forget to turn it off manually. However, there are some glaring issues with the design. The bottle has an open mouth, which immediately made me skeptical. Unlike other bottles that come with a nozzle or straw, this one exposes the water directly to the outside environment. This openness is a recipe for disaster in terms of hygiene, especially if you're relying on it in a survival situation. Every time you take a sip or refill the bottle, you risk introducing contaminants back into the water. It's not just about the water you're drinking; it's about how easily germs and dirt can sneak back in. I tried to drink directly from the bottle during testing, but it felt risky, so I ended up pouring the water into a glass instead. The cap itself has a narrow gap between the UV light and the bottle opening, making it nearly impossible to clean thoroughly. When I asked CrazyCap about this, they suggested washing it with soap and water, but admitted that you'd likely need a narrow brush to clean inside properly. This is problematic, especially if you're in a situation where access to cleaning supplies is limited. On the positive side, the UV light does seem to work effectively. It killed bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens within the specified time frame. The fact that it automatically runs a cleaning cycle every four hours is a nice touch, helping to prevent mold growth when the bottle isn't in use. However, even this feature isn't foolproof. CrazyCap recommends deep cleaning the bottle with boiling water and vinegar at least once a month, which is quite a hassle. Another issue I encountered was the inconsistent activation of the UV light. Sometimes it took several attempts to get it to turn on, which was frustrating. The instructions say to tap the cap twice for tap water and five times for natural water sources, but in practice, it didn't always respond as expected. The bottle itself is decent quality, with a stainless steel body that keeps drinks cold for hours. The cap is also stainless steel, and the touchpad for activating the UV light is smooth and flush with the cap. However, the mechanical imperfection I noticed in the cap — it didn't screw on perfectly — was a bit concerning. Despite this, the bottle didn't leak, which was reassuring. One feature that stood out was the ability to use the UV light to sterilize other small items, like phones or keys. While this is a neat addition, it’s more of a bonus than a primary function. Just be aware that UV light can irritate your skin, so avoid exposing your hands to it. In conclusion, while the CrazyCap Gen2 is a decent option for everyday use, it falls short for serious outdoor or survival situations. The open mouth design is a major downside, as it introduces too many opportunities for contamination. For prepping or emergency scenarios, I would look elsewhere. On the flip side, if you're looking for a stylish, reusable bottle for regular use, it could be worth considering, provided you're okay with the potential hygiene risks. Ultimately, I’d say the CrazyCap Gen2 is more of a convenience item than a reliable survival tool. It’s great for those who want to feel like they’re doing something extra to ensure their water is safe, but it’s not something I’d trust in a pinch.
