How To Package Oily Metal Components – The Packaging Doctor
The Surgery Is Now Open

To The Packaging Doctor,
I manage a fulfillment center and we’ve recently landed a contract with a specialized engineering firm to package and ship out metal components. Some of these parts are either oily or still contain residual liquid, and our current packaging approach often results in leaks during transit. Since this is a relatively new area for us, we’re not entirely sure how to address the problem. Do you offer any leak-proof packaging options? The components tend to be fairly large.
Thanks, Robert
Hi Robert,
I’m happy to help! There are two main approaches we recommend for packaging oily or wet metal parts effectively. One option is to use waxed paper, which is specifically designed for heavy-duty engineering components. Our 65 gsm waxed paper provides a moisture-resistant barrier, keeping the contents safe from leakage while also preventing rust. After wrapping the parts, you can simply place them into a sturdy box for shipment.
Another effective method involves using vermiculite as a loose-fill material. This natural mineral-based product is incredibly absorbent, making it perfect for handling potentially hazardous or leaking items. Vermiculite offers excellent protection against impacts and shocks, plus it’s highly adaptable for irregularly shaped objects. To create a secure package, first place the component inside a heavy-duty polythene bag—these bags are designed to handle weighty items and offer great tear resistance. Then, pour the vermiculite around the part to fill any empty spaces. Finally, seal the bag securely with a cable tie. Our releasable ties are made of durable nylon and can easily be opened by the recipient using the convenient finger catch.
Both methods should work well depending on your specific needs, but I’d recommend going with vermiculite if you want extra protection for larger or more delicate components. Either way, you’ll have peace of mind knowing your shipments will arrive intact!
Best wishes,
The Packaging Doctor
