Peak Packaging Monday: The Most Popular Day for Business-to-Business Packaging Purchases

This Monday, November 24th, marks the peak day for B2B packaging purchases in the UK...

Known as Peak Packaging Monday, November 24th is a crucial date for the UK's business-to-business sector, especially for those in the packaging industry and retail. It's the day when businesses place the largest orders for packaging supplies in preparation for the holiday season. Why does this day hold so much significance for companies?

With the holiday shopping season approaching, consumer spending is on the rise, especially online. During the final quarter of the year, which runs from September to December, there is a noticeable spike in sales. In fact, the Centre for Retail Research UK reports that spending in December increases by an average of 60% compared to other months. Online shopping also sees a massive boost, with Experian estimating that UK consumers will spend a staggering 400 million hours shopping online in December, contributing to a total retail revenue of £10.5 billion.

Cyber Monday, a relatively new phenomenon in the UK, takes place on the first Monday of December and is often referred to by retailers as the "biggest shopping day of the year." Compared to the Thanksgiving holiday in the US, where Cyber Monday follows shortly after, the concept has gained traction in the UK. For instance, Amazon generated £4.1 million in sales on Cyber Monday 2013 alone. IBM reported that online sales increased by 31.6% on Cyber Monday last year, with an average transaction value of £81.17.

This trend naturally affects the business-to-business market. Increased consumer spending translates into more packages being shipped. Royal Mail's research indicates that 56% of online shoppers prefer this method of Christmas shopping, spending 77% of their total budget through this channel. Additionally, 70% of deliveries during the holiday season are handled by Royal Mail. To manage the influx, Royal Mail has opened 10 temporary parcel sorting centers across the UK for November and December 2014. They've also hired 19,000 seasonal workers to handle the expected surge in mail and package deliveries, processing over 50 million items daily.

All these packages, whether destined for customers or loved ones, require proper protection. Packaging distributors like Kite Packaging, based in Coventry, have observed a 25% increase in order activity during November year-over-year since they began operations in 2004. Jake Kirk, Managing Partner of Kite Packaging, noted, "As the e-commerce market continues to expand, we’ve seen a substantial rise in order activity around November and December as people prepare for Christmas. Commonly purchased items include tape, boxes, and mailing bags. Both the number of orders and the overall order value have grown significantly. On average, November sees a 40% increase in turnover compared to the rest of the year."

These trends are unsurprising to manufacturers who supply packaging products to distributors. Leading UK corrugated board manufacturers report a 30-35% increase in sales during Q4, with 80% of their clients being major retailers like supermarkets, distributors, fulfillment houses, and prominent e-commerce platforms. This growth has a significant impact on production. Since corrugators use specialized machinery requiring extensive training, hiring temporary staff isn't feasible. Instead, they implement a 'forward-making' strategy, producing extra inventory during slower times and storing it for the Q4 surge. Facilities operate 24/7, with all workers on standby during the Christmas shutdown in case of unexpected demand.

Mailing houses also experience heightened pressure during the holiday season, especially when handling large contracts for Christmas catalogues. These items, along with small gifts and toys, require mailing bags. VP Papier, Europe's top supplier of paper-based mailing products, sees a typical 30-40% increase in sales, while other suppliers like Jiffy and Sansetsu follow similar practices, building up stock throughout the year to meet the seasonal demand.

Though packaging may seem like a disposable product, it plays a vital role in the everyday operations of thousands of UK businesses.

Peak Packaging Monday is expected to be as successful as ever this year, with distributors and suppliers already planning their stock and distribution strategies to handle the anticipated increase. National carriers will also face a surge, with Peak Packaging Day marking the beginning of their busy season. On average, delivery demand rises by 40%, peaking at 80% during the busiest weeks compared to the annual off-peak average.

Kite Packaging is poised for its most successful Peak Packaging Monday yet since launching its online business in 2004. A spokesperson commented, "Peak Packaging Monday gives us a clear indication of how well retailers are performing in the lead-up to Christmas. High volume orders signal strong end-of-year sales projections, which is excellent news for B2B organizations like ours. We’ve focused heavily on our product range this year and believe our competitive pricing model will make us an attractive choice during the busy purchasing period."
