HP MSA1000 RAID ADG Data Recovery Darth Technology

Media Information: HP MSA1000, RAID ADG with seven hard drives, operating system: Windows Server 2003.

Fault Description:

The system started showing a $MFT error, which is typically an indicator of file system corruption. The administrator initially ignored the warning and did not run the CHKDSK command to fix it. One day, the second disk in the array turned red, signaling a failure. The administrator decided to remove the second disk and replace it with a new one. After completing the replacement, the disk partition still could not be accessed, and the data remained inaccessible.

Data Recovery Process:

A RAID data recovery engineer analyzed the underlying data structure and found that the first 15 GB of each disk contained similar redundancy information, following the RAID ADG data combination rules. Each disk had about 15 GB of data that matched the expected RAID configuration. Based on this, the engineer concluded that the data reconstruction followed the RAID ADG logic. However, the reason for the failed rebuild might have been due to a misconfiguration during the replacement process. It's possible that the system treated the new second disk as the seventh disk, or the seventh disk was removed and the system used the second disk to rebuild. Other potential errors could have occurred during the replacement or subsequent operations. To recover the data, the engineer reconstructed the RAID array using the 15 GB per disk data pattern, simulating the original RAID setup. Although the directory structure became disordered after recovery, most files were successfully retrieved and appeared to be intact.

Data Recovery Results:

Most of the data was successfully recovered, and the majority of files were accessible and in good condition.

Advice to Customers:

If a RAID server fails, the first step should be to stop the server immediately to prevent further damage. It's important to carefully label the hard drive positions and avoid any unnecessary changes. Instead of attempting to fix the server yourself, it's strongly recommended to contact a professional RAID data recovery service to safely retrieve your data before proceeding with any repairs. This approach can significantly increase the chances of successful data recovery and reduce the risk of permanent data loss.
