Antique furniture is favored to highlight design level competition

Antique furniture has gained widespread popularity in today's market due to its unique craftsmanship, refined aesthetics, and timeless appeal. In many developed nations, antique-style furniture accounts for over 70% of the market. This trend reflects a growing desire among consumers to connect with the past and express individuality through their home decor. The production of such furniture involves several methods: one is hand or machine-carved decorative elements made from premium woods; another uses wood fibers, scrap materials, and rubber mixed together and pressed into shapes using metal molds; the third involves molding polymer-based components with either metal or non-metal molds. American consumers have shown a strong preference for Chinese-made furniture, making it a top export product from China. Over the years, the quality of Chinese furniture has significantly improved, especially in the antique category, which now holds a strong position in the U.S. market. In the multi-billion-dollar wooden furniture industry, Chinese products hold a 35% share, and the U.S. remains China’s largest furniture trading partner. Despite this success, China’s antique furniture industry faces a "big but not strong" challenge. Its main advantage lies in low costs and broad consumer appeal. However, when compared to Italy, the world’s leading furniture exporter, China’s export volume is much higher, but its efficiency lags behind. For instance, a single handle on an Italian bedside table can cost as much as the entire Chinese-made version. While domestic products are now comparable in appearance to Italian designs, they still fall short in terms of hardware and material quality. Looking ahead, the antique furniture market is expected to continue growing, with prices likely to rise steadily. High-quality, well-crafted pieces will remain in high demand, while lower-end, poorly made items may struggle to find buyers. Industry experts suggest that improving design innovation and increasing product value are key to boosting China’s furniture exports and enhancing its global competitiveness.
