The Contradiction between Easy Opening and Anti-theft of Packaging Containers and Design Improvement

For many years, in terms of the design of packaging containers, the pursuit of easy opening and anti-theft of packaging containers is an important design category, and it is also the key to whether a packaging container meets practical needs. However, both openness and anti-theft are often contradictory. The author once saw with his own eyes that some consumers scratched their fingers to open a wine bottle with anti-theft protection; some opened the anti-theft cap and broke the broken glass slag into the bottle.

So, what should be put in the first place for the easy-openability and theft-resistance of packaging containers? This is a problem that is more difficult to choose. Generally speaking, this should be determined based on the type of content, the type of packaging container, and the market demand.

The current market has reached the era of the coexistence of small-batch commodities and large-volume commodities. For the goods that must be packaged, various packaging containers can only be regarded as commodity packaging if they meet the functions of product distribution, distribution, and storage. In other words, the current era of market economy is an era when packaging containers and commodities share the sales strategy.

In the past, when designing a packaging container, it was mainly considered that the consumer could simply remove the content from the container when using the product, because the convenience of the use of the packaging container by the consumer was very high. As for now, we can still see many inventions and ideas for the convenience of packaging containers.

The key to continuously expanding the sales market is to gain consumers' understanding and support of the functions of packaging containers. It is often asked: "What is the market demand?" From the point of view of market sales, the answer should be: "Best-selling goods are the needs of consumers!"

The market is constantly evolving, and demand is constantly changing. So, what will the future packaging containers look like? For those of us engaged in the manufacture of packaging containers, the most important thing is to conduct in-depth investigation and research every day.

The importance of packaging containers and their functions depends to a large extent on the consumer's lifestyle because they use it every day. From this point of view, the functions that are not needed now may be what other time is needed. The development of easy-opening and anti-theft properties of packaging containers is a testament to this concept of development.

Packaging container easy to open

Almost all beverage cans with lids are now introduced to China 20 years ago. At that time, when many people saw it, they all thought, “It's not worth it to spend a lot of money to make it easier to open cans.” Some people also said: “Ye Laga is simply a waste!”

Openability is a requirement that meets the majority of consumers who drink outdoors. Not only the metal cans, but also the glass bottles, paper containers, etc., must be adapted to the requirements of the consumer's time, place, and usage, and they should be designed to be containers that can directly drink the contents.

In the early days of development, when aluminum cans were opened, due to the extensibility of aluminum, the profile of the aluminum cans was elongated to form a sharp blade shape, causing many people's lips to be injured. People called it a "cutter." Later, people devoted themselves to the research and development of new types of aluminum materials, resulting in the easy-to-open covers that are now seen.

Closely related to ease of opening is theft prevention. The safe and reliable delivery of contents to consumers is one of the important roles of packaging containers. If the container is unsealed during this process and the quality of the contents cannot be held responsible, consumers should be allowed to make judgments about such things.

In short, opening the package should be simple and easy. However, if someone other than the consumer can easily turn it on, it means that the accident may happen. It must be observed that an unsafe container is a defect in the performance of the packaging container.

So, how can the two contradictory aspects be well compatible? This will require the development and research of new properties of packaging containers. Even in the field of glass bottles, it is also necessary to develop new properties. From the crown cover to the current anti-theft cover, just because they are consistent with the design of the packaging container, it expanded its scope of use.

Openability is based on the balance between tightness and ease of opening. In recent years, due to the improvement of plastic properties, the sealability of the heat seal can be freely adjusted even if it is not improved by the mechanical mechanism. As a result, various heat-sealing products have appeared on the market.

Anti-theft of packaging containers

As early as 1982, the United States had a “Tailenol” incident where the contents of its packaging were stolen. The manufacturer took measures against the packaging containers according to the lessons of the incident. The first is how to improve the measures to prevent theft after shipment; the second is to leave obvious traces after theft.

After this incident occurred, the United States immediately revised some administrative rules and introduced the concept of anti-theft packaging. In order to prevent the burglary incident, a special sealing system must be designed so that once the closure of the container is opened, it can be easily identified.

At that time, in the United States Federal Register, the basic concepts of anti-theft packaging were explained. This standard stipulates: "When the package is handed or opened, it must have special structural instructions that can leave consumers with identifiable marks." That is to say, not only is it anti-theft, but also must have evidence.

It is considered very important that there is a difference in meaning between theft proof and burglary proof. Because consumers can check the purchased packaged goods to determine whether they may be dangerous or deceived, and take action to protect themselves. This principle is also a consistent personal protection stance of Americans in their thinking and methods. There are many things that Americans use their judgment as the sole criterion. However, in China, there are many things that hope to be protected by various laws and regulations. This may be a big difference between the two societies.
As this type of evidence with anti-theft packaging and China's actual situation is not the same, so the implementation of anti-theft packaging in our country is not the same. The earliest widespread use of the United States, Japan and Europe, of course, is the popularity of our country in recent years.

At present, anti-theft packaging is mainly used by pharmaceutical manufacturers. The requirements for anti-theft packaging are:
(1) If it is opened, it is difficult to restore the original state, leaving traces of Kaifeng.
(2) When selling in pharmacies or other places, it can be judged whether or not it has been opened.
(3) Equipment can be used for present and future pharmaceutical packaging production lines.
(4) The cost of materials and production equipment for packaging containers is low.
(5) It must not impair the easy-to-open requirements of consumers.

Therefore, the most common and most versatile package at the beginning was the shrink-wrapped film package. Many of the crown caps and wide-mouth bottle caps that were originally used had mostly used anti-theft caps.

Recently, some people have also designed one of their products. When the peeling label is opened, the words “opened” will appear in the engraving, leaving clear traces of opening.

Now, this kind of evidence has been widely used in anti-theft packaging containers for pharmaceutical packaging, but its application in food and other industries has been relatively slow.

Most people think that there is no need to take special measures for metal containers. Glass containers, in addition to crown caps, are used in anti-theft caps and shrink packs.

In the FDA regulation of the United States, it is clearly stated that: “When implementing anti-theft packaging regulations, it must be understood that there is absolutely no way to prevent malicious piracy. Therefore, when it comes to the sale of goods, it is absolutely necessary to prevent theft. The change of packaging instructions is contrary to its regulations. Exaggerated packaging instructions are the object of legal management, and this should be noted.” This regulation only stipulates the anti-theft measures of consumers and manufacturers.

At present, in all countries of the world, the act of changing the contents of a package has been criminalized and must be severely punished. As early as 1983, the United States amended the criminal law stipulated for heavy penalties and joined the crimes related to theft of packaging contents. In Japan, due to the occurrence of similar incidents, the 1985 “Outline for the Prevention of Poison and Food Distribution Law” was enacted. China has also introduced a series of relevant laws and regulations in recent years.

In short, in order to prevent the occurrence of theft of packaging contents, it is best to face up to the transaction. Some products that cannot be traded face to face require anti-theft packaging. Even if it is a single package of goods, the external packaging needs to be anti-theft, but on the other hand, how the packaging industry makes consumers easy to open, it is also the need for product development.

So how will the anti-theft packaging that contradicts easy-openness develop? We must realize that there are still many difficulties waiting for us to overcome in the future development of packaging products.
